General Info

Fosamax is a medication indicated for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men at high risk of fractures.

Fosamax
Active Ingredient

Alendronate.

Description

Fosamax is useful for the treatment and prevention of certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults, both men, and women. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. The chance of developing osteoporosis increases as aging, after menopause, or in case of taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time.

The active ingredient of Fosamax is Alendronate that belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. This medication slows bone loss and helps to maintain bones stronger. Usually, to obtain a better effect, patients need to administrate this medication from 8 up to 12 weeks.

Uses of Fosamax

The medication is indicated for the following health conditions:

  • Osteoporosis.
  • Paget’s disease.
How it works

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate, and it works by suppressing the activity of osteoclasts, the cells that cause the destruction of the bone. It strengthens the bones and minimizes the risk of fractures.

Dosage

Patients should take Fosamax in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine whole. Do not chew, crush, or break it. Take Fosamax first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Do not lie down after taking the medicine. Wait at least 1 hour before taking any other medication or eating or drinking anything.

Expert advice for the use of Fosamax:

  • Patients need to take Fosamax on an empty stomach.
  • Patients need to take Fosamax in the morning at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything.
  • It is essential to maintain an upright posture for 30 minutes after taking the medication, so the medicine doesn't irritate your food pipe.
  • While taking Fosamax, the amount of calcium in your blood may fall. You need to take a calcium-rich diet and have regular blood tests to monitor the level of calcium in your blood.
  • Patients should visit the dentist regularly. Inform your dentist that you are taking Fosamax.
Missed dose

If a dose of Fosamax is missed, take it as soon as you remember. It is advisable to skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of an overdose.
